Small Projects
Forge House - Ash
This project fully renovated an old house and adjoining forge building. Prior to purchase my client was fully aware of the extent of building works required but with cottage gardens of a third of an acre there was more than good reason to purchase and realise its considerable potential.

Once planning consent was granted the main house was repaired and extended with a new extension on two stories at the rear of the property to provide a study and a voluminous new master bedroom overlooking the gardens. A complete rebuild was required for the forge, but faithful to its original form and as part of this work, it was fully opened up to the house to provide a very large free flowing living space. New integrated heating proposals included solar panels discretely located on the roof connected to a traditional wood fired boiler, a happy arrangement of old and new technology working with one accord in the 21st century.
Private House - Kingston Nr Canterbury
A two bedroom bungalow with much potential was purchased by my client. I secured planning consent in this conservation area and this has allowed the construction of a rear extension to considerably increase the size of the master bedroom also adding a study overlooking the pretty garden. A storm porch was part of the construction proposals.

All new building work blends well with the original building to the point that it is hard to differentiate between new and the original built more than 50 years ago. The new building extension is shown to the left in these photographs.
Private House – Herne Bay
Quite a different design approach to the example above, this project was for a young couple who wished to change a tiny one bedroom bungalow, purchased in very poor condition, to a much more spacious and modern interior with an open plan living area connecting effortlessly with the garden.

Once consent for Prior Household Notification was gained a 6 metre long single storey rear extension was constructed with a part pitched and hipped gabled roof, vaulted on the inside. The remainder of the extension is under a flat roof with two rooflights to ensure the interior is light and bright. This design also facilitated an additional bedroom.
Penthouse - London
A large penthouse on the top two floors of a building near Kew Bridge with a fantastic roof terrace overlooking the River Thames. The penthouse required both major re-planning and the design for the interior modernising considerably. Living spaces on the top floor and were re-designed to be ‘open plan’ with a kitchen where the ‘creative’ cooking area is part of this main living space but where the preparation area is hidden from general view.

Large doors disappear into adjacent walls to maximise ‘entertainment space’ which can also close when additional privacy is required. In keeping with the concept of ‘free flowing spaces’ the day rooms now link effortlessly with the bedrooms and en-suites located on the floor below. A genuinely enjoyable project and collaborative creation with my clients.
Of the many small scale projects I have been commissioned here are brief descriptions of just four of them.
Rectory Cottage – Ickham
I gained Full Planning and Listed Building Consent for modifications to an early 18th century Grade 2 listed house which includes a mid Victorian annex building in the garden. Many years ago the annex had been the rector’s study and also the church Sunday School. My client wished to make a discrete link from the house and to convert part of the annex to a large family kitchen room with double doors opening onto the terrace at the top of the garden. The remainder of the annex was designed to be a residential studio.
(You can find some drawings for this project in ‘Planning Information’ on the FOR YOU page)
Green Lane Farm - Nr Sandwich
A brick built agricultural barn that my client wished to be converted to a holiday home under Class Q Town & Country Planning Act and ‘permitted development’ for change of use to residential. Having produced a feasibility scheme it was clear that the very rigid criteria required for an approval under Class Q would be too restricting for a holiday home of acceptable proportions so the design layout was extended on plan for a better size living room and, in height, to provide good headroom for the mezzanine master bedroom.
Drop in Centre for East Kent Mencap - Cliftonville Nr Margate
My second commission for East Kent Mencap was to fully refurbish a rundown shop in the High Street to become a community drop in centre for the charity. The project was completed on a modest budget and a quick start to completion timescale.
Chislet Court – Chislet Nr Canterbury
A derelict Victorian building previously accommodating workers at a farm in Chislet. I was a consultant for this project to design and produce all the necessary drawings for a building. At the same time some major structural problems required solving. The brief was also to extend the premises to maximise its development potential.
