Large Projects
Here are brief descriptions of some of the many large projects I have been strategically involved.
Bishopsgate Institute - City of London
A large Grade 2* listed building. Project Architect for the full refurbishment and part major restoration of a large public building carried out in two phases and a building cost of £4.5 million. Photographs and drawings here show the completed restoration of the Great Hall to include facilities for professional music concerts, public debates and a venue available for corporate event hire.

An existing service yard to the side of the building was re-developed to create a new cafe facility for both institute and passing street trade. At the insistence of English Heritage (now renamed Historic England) were the proposals for full glazing so that the Victorian features of the original building at the back of the cafe would remain as visible as possible. This project included the complete restoration of the stone frontage to two of the building entrances and the installation of a new lift carefully inserted in an existing light well to give full wheelchair access to each of the three main floor levels. (The interior design of the cafe was by another consultancy)
St Andrew Undershaft - London
A Grade 1 listed church in the City of London. Senior Architect for the full refurbishment and partial restoration of the historic building to be used mainly as a daytime bible study centre. This church is one of only three medieval churches within the City of London precincts to have survived the Great Fire of London.

The re-ordering of the church has included a new mezzanine balcony at the West End for meetings, an area for Sunday School and new ablution facilities are below this contemporary upper level. Much careful work was involved repositioning many of the fine historic wall monuments also the removal of a later Victorian period raised chancel choir area considered to be an inappropriate addition to the medieval building. Work to fully redecorate with new lighting and underfloor heating completed the project.
Lenley’s - Canterbury
Design Architect for remodelling the frontage for Lenley’s in Canterbury. The previous frontage had an ‘industrial estate’ image and needed a substantial facelift. Importantly the delivery of a new design identity needed to ensure that the ongoing retail business was not compromised. The new frontage design adds a stylish modern aesthetic, combines a 3 dimensional window display front extension and a protective glass canopy when approaching the front door.

Housing - Wingham, Nr Canterbury
Design Architect for a development of six executive houses at the old railway site on the edge of Wingham village. Each house is designed differently but has recurring architectural details so that there is a family resemblance of the building group. The larger houses are located more distantly from the road to reduce their impact as the site here dips down towards the edge of a flood plain.

Palace of Westminster - London
Grade 1 listed and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Director Architect in charge of major projects associated with the building and fine joinery at the Houses of Parliament the detail of which I designed and managed during eight Parliamentary Summer Recesses. I’m not permitted to tell you much more about this one.
Kensington Palace - London
All Grade 1 listed with parts of the Palace being a Scheduled Monument.
Due to the nature of the project, much delicate negotiation with English Heritage for listed building consent (works covered under 18/84 legislation) and for scheduled monument clearance. Liaison with civil servants. The project restored and converted one of the larger historic apartments to a private suite of offices.
Australia House - London
Project Site Architect for a major refurbishment project at the Australian Embassy, Strand side of the Aldwych. This included security work within their diplomatic communications centre. I’m not permitted to tell you much more about this one either!
Imperial College - London
Completion of four major educational ‘fit outs’ of laboratory and study facilities at Imperial College London. Each of these projects were design and build (D&B) contracts where I was working on behalf of the contractor.
Office Fitout - SOLICITORS LONDON EC1.
Full builders working drawings and contractor tender packages for a £2.5million office interior fit out.
Residential Fitout - Holland Park London
Director Architect in charge of a £5 million fit out of 25 apartments and 2 penthouses in Holland Park again a D&B project with the same contractor as mentioned above for Imperial College.
